Iglesia de la Compañia |
|
The main altar and gold-lined roof of Quito's oldest church. The church fell in an earthquake, and was burned twice (once, in fact, during restoration). Yet slowly but surely, the city is continuing its restoration work. When it was first built, the Spanish used something on the order of 50 kg of gold. (Or maybe more, we forget; we just remember it was a LOT.) |
