As the glacier advances, tall pillars of ice form as cracks grow wider from pressure and the heat of the sun. Every so often, a giant piece of ice will break off and plummet to the water in a spectacular crash — hence the name of the canal. To give a sense of scale, the piece that broke off the top here was about 20 meters tall — less than half the height of the glacier itself. |
